Nsanje makes progress in registration exercise

Nsanje District has registered progress in the ongoing national identity (ID) cards mass registration exercise despite challenges it faced during the early stages of the programme.

Malawi News Agency (Mana) crew on Tuesday witnessed people going to centres in large numbers to register. Meanwhile, 20 centres out of 93 have been closed after completing the exercise in their respective catchment areas.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Nsanje assistant district registrar Thomas Ndifitsa said approximately 60 percent of the 151 000 targeted people have registered despite some challenges, including poor weather conditions and faulty equipment.

“It is true that registration centres have been closed after traditional leaders confirmed that their subjects had registered. Not only that, these centres beat their targets,” he said.

According to National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Nsanje district civic education officer Kondwani Malunga, mass mobilisation campaigns have proved to be beneficial to the registration exercise.

“During the initial stages of the registration exercise, we got information that some people in the area of Mchacha 58 in the East Bank were reluctant to get registered as their denomination advised them not to do so.

“However, after we reached them with the messages, they all got registered,” said Malunga.
